In 1786, Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar moved the capital of his newly unified kingdom of Iran to a then-quiet settlement at the foot of the northern mountains: Tehran.
Now, more than two centuries later, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian is seeking to relocate once again.
The president has tasked his government to carry out feasibility studies on moving the capital out of Tehran, saying environmental challenges have made the sprawling megacity of 10mn unlivable and that leaving is “no longer an option, but a mandate”.
