Germany and France are rallying fellow EU members to back retaliation against US tariffs unless Washington compromises, as the bloc’s stance hardens before an August 1 deadline for a trade deal.
Berlin, having previously pushed hard to negotiate with Donald Trump’s administration to reduce the barriers to exports erected by the US president, now wants to threaten a strong response, people familiar with its thinking say.
It has joined forces with Paris, which has long advocated gaining leverage over Trump by inflicting pain on US businesses via retaliatory duties.
