Argentina’s President Javier Milei has issued an executive decree preapproving a loan agreement from the IMF, signalling the imminent conclusion of a long-awaited deal that is essential to his economic plan.
Milei’s office said the decree satisfied Argentina’s legal requirement, enshrined in a 2021 law, for governments to seek congressional approval for new or expanded IMF loans.
Argentina’s most recent agreement with the IMF — a refinancing in 2022 of a 2018 loan — faced a fierce battle for approval by both houses of congress under the 2021 law.
