Few fashion shows, even in Paris, will find Jeff Bezos, Ron Howard and Alex Rodriguez cozied in their front rows. But Tom Ford’s Autumn/Winter 2020 reveal on Friday in Los Angeles was so crowded with glitz that one had to remind oneself it wasn’t the Oscars.
There was A-Rod pulling Jennifer Lopez along by the arm. Over there, Miley Cyrus was taking selfies by the bar in a black halter jumpsuit with her heavily tattooed brother Trace Cyrus. Jon Hamm wandered by, and wandered back again, in a shiny form-fitted birds-egg blue suit that would have made Don Draper blush. There was James Corden, host of the Late Late Show, talking and waving his arms in the air. Lil Nas X’s publicist wanted to send the rapper in to greet Ford.
Meanwhile, 2,500 miles away, New York Fashion Week was gnashing its teeth. As Ford entertained Hollywood with a precursor to the Academy Awards, which take place on Sunday, New York designers were earnestly showing their wares on runways whose front rows were filled with influencers and fashion editors — but not the one editor who really counts. Because Anna Wintour was at Tom Ford. She was seated next to Jeff Bezos, who was seated with his paramour, Lauren Sanchez.
