Bernie Sanders has pulled out of the Democratic presidential race, paving the way for former vice-president Joe Biden to be the party’s nominee to challenge Donald Trump in November.
The Vermont senator, 78, told staffers on a conference call on Wednesday morning that he was suspending his presidential campaign, before a livestreamed address to supporters.
Mr Sanders said it was a “very difficult and painful decision”, adding: “If I believed we had a feasible path to the nomination, I would certainly continue the campaign. But it is just not there.”
