A simmering dispute between the US justice department and Apple over the use of encryption in widely-used consumer technology threatened to flare up again, after the FBI asked for information contained on two locked iPhones.
The agency wrote to the company earlier this week
in pursuit of a search warrant for information on handsets that belonged to Mohammed Saeed Alshamrani, who the FBI has said killed three people at a naval base in Florida in December. The Saudi air force student killed himself after the attack.
