China’s biggest-budget film has been pulled from cinemas after its opening weekend, dealing a blow to investors including the movie studio of the country’s technology champion Alibaba.
Asura, which state media reported was made for $113m, was withdrawn on Sunday, its investors said. It took in just $7.3m in its first weekend, according to Chinese movie website Maoyan.
The film’s failure, which would rank alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest ever flops in terms of money lost, comes as China vies to displace the North American box office as the world’s largest.
