In the lead up to the summit between US president Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Singapore has been hailed as the Geneva of Asia after playing host to several international summits thanks to its diplomatic impartiality.
The city-state has been the location of choice for historic summits, including the meeting between the presidents of China and Taiwan in 2015, and hosts the Shangri-La Dialogue, an annual Asia-Pacific security forum.
“When you participate internationally people know that you carry a bit more weight,” Lee Hsien Loong, the country’s prime minister, said in a briefing on Sunday.
