The fierce competition between China’s bike-sharing start-ups spread to Singapore on Tuesday as Tencent-backed Beijing company Mobike launched in the city state, challenging Didi Chuxing-backed rival ofo.
Mobike’s orange-coloured bicycles and ofo’s yellow ones have become a familiar sight in many Chinese cities, where so many cycles have been deployed that local officials are running out of ways to keep them from littering the streets.
In an effort to avoid similar scenes on the pristine streets of Singapore, Mobike is launching on a smaller scale with 500 bikes, and plans to increase the supply once it has gauged demand.
