Xi Jinping is rekindling efforts to promote a rival to the US-led Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement in the wake of Donald Trump’s election victory, Chinese officials have said.
China was excluded from the TPP, which the Obama administration signed this year with Japan and 10 other nations and promoted as a strategic response to Beijing’s influence in the region. But Mr Trump put opposition to the TPP at the heart of his campaign and his election has killed the prospect of its ratification by the US Congress.
The void has offered Beijing an opportunity to argue for faster adoption of a broader Asia-Pacific free trade area.
