Even as the US pivots towards Asia, one of its most longstanding allies in the region appears to be turning away.
The Philippines has been treaty allies with the US since 1951. But statements from new president Rodrigo Duterte this week announcing the end of joint naval patrols in the disputed South China Sea, and expelling US forces from southern Mindanao, have raised concerns about the future of the alliance.
“China is now in power, and they have the military superiority in the region,” said Mr Duterte, who is known for his frank but often contradictory language.
