Last week I went to a school in east London to try out the “world’s first work experience simulator”. I was instinctively sceptical of this shiny white pod with touchscreens and a smart swivel chair. Simulators usually mimic rollercoasters, journeys into space and fighter pilot missions.
Wasn’t a work simulator going to oversell the thrills and spills of having a job?
I need not have worried. This simulation begins with a man who welcomes you on your first day in the office, then leaves you to figure out who to call about your IT problems. Later, there is an angry customer to placate and a few emails to send. My favourite bit was choosing a tweet to send at the end of the day. Options include: “Had a great first day @company thanks guys! #FirstDay #WorkExperience” and “My new boss made me stay late on my first day #HateWork #Lameboss”.
