The controversy over Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email account while in government deepened on Friday when the state department said that 22 of the former secretary of state’s emails contained “top secret” information.
The state department said the documents were not marked classified at the time but that it was reviewing whether the information was classified when they were sent or received by Mrs Clinton’s private email server.
The revelation comes just days before voters go to the polls in Iowa where Mrs Clinton, the one-time Democratic frontrunner, is locked in a tight race with Vermont senator Bernie Sanders.
