President Barack Obama’s Syria refugee policy has suffered a blow after the US House of Representatives passed a measure that would make it harder for people fleeing the war-torn country to come to the US.
The House on Thursday voted 289-137 to impose stringent vetting requirements for Syrian and Iraqi refugees, with nearly 50 Democrats breaking ranks with the president.
Mr Obama, who has vowed to veto the measure if it also receives the necessary Senate approval, has accused Republicans of “shameful” behaviour over their response to the Syrian humanitarian crisis.
