The clearance of Hong Kong's main protest site began on Thursday, as authorities sought to bring to an end to more than two months of civil disobedience in the Chinese territory.
Makeshift barriers on streets surrounding the city's main government offices were dismantled and removed, as pro-democracy activists and a large media pack looked on, writes Amie Tsang.
Protesters had started to leave the area earlier in the morning ahead of a planned police operation.
