Angela Merkel said on Sunday that the fall of the Berlin Wall 25 years ago should serve as inspiration in tackling today’s global challenges, including the crises in Ukraine, Syria and Iraq.
Speaking at a commemoration event marking the 25th anniversary of the Berlin Wall’s collapse, the German chancellor said: “We have the power to shape. We can turn things to the good: That is the message of the fall of the Wall. At this time, this [message] is aimed at Ukraine, Syria, Iraq and many other regions of the world.”
In a speech broadcast live across Germany from a Berlin Wall memorial site, she added: “The fall of the Wall showed us that dreams can come true. Nothing has to stay as it is.”
