Berlin has demanded a swift explanation from Washington over allegations that an agent working for Germany’s intelligence agency was spying for the US, as German political outrage over the affair threatens a fresh diplomatic rift.
Thomas de Maiziere, Germany’s interior minister, described the claims as “very serious”. He told Bild, the newspaper: “I expect everyone to co-operate promptly to clear up these allegations – with quick and clear comments from the United States as well.”
Frank-Walter Steinmeier, foreign minister, called on Washington to provide the “quickest possible clarification of the facts”.
