Nearly a month after China intensified its clampdown on Google’s services, many Chinese businesses are discovering how exposed they are to the US search company, whose fortunes in China are hostage to the so-called Great Firewall, designed to keep out pernicious foreign influences.
China so-called Great Firewall is designed to block subversive content on the internet and has been used against Facebook, Twitter and YouTube over the past few years.
But the blocking of most Google services over the past month has had a bigger impact on business. The previous time that Google was blocked in this scale was during the Communist party’s Third Plenum in November, but that lasted only a matter of days. This time, Google has been blocked for the entire month of June.
