Europe’s top justice official has expressed concern at allegations that Britain’s intelligence service has been tapping trans-atlantic fibre optic cables that carry internet data between the US and Europe.
In a letter to William Hague, the UK foreign secretary, Viviane Reding requested detailed clarifications about the scope of the UK’s spying practices and whether they violated European privacy rules.
“If media reports are true, these programmes could have a serious impact on the fundamental rights of individuals in the European Union,” the EU commissioner wrote in the letter, a copy of which was obtained by the Financial Times.
