China’s health minister said on Monday that the smuggling of infant formula from Hong Kong into China was an issue Beijing was deeply concerned about after local news reports that Hong Kong had arrested about 45 traders allegedly smuggling infant formula out of the city to mainland China.
Under regulations that came into force on Friday, traders carrying more than 1.8kg of infant formula into China are subject to a maximum penalty of two years in jail and a HK$500,000 fine.
Speaking in Beijing on Monday, China’s health minister, Chen Zhu, described the smuggling of infant formula as a “temporary problem”.
