China will increase its official defence budget by 10.7 per cent this year, continuing a nearly unbroken run of double-digit hikes over the past two decades.
Wen Jiabao, China’s outgoing premier, on Tuesday told the National People’s Congress, the country’s rubber stamp parliament, that military spending would grow to Rmb720bn ($116bn) in 2013.
China has been hiking military expenditure faster than that of any other large country over the past decade, and is the second-largest military spender after the US.
