Chinese visitors helped keep UK retailers afloat during the summer while shopping by all other nationalities fell in the spending lull that hit the country during the London Olympic Games.
Sales to Chinese shoppers grew 5 per cent in August, in sharp contrast to big falls in spending by Russia, Nigerian and Middle Eastern visitors to the UK, down 19 per cent, 32 per cent and 21 per cent respectively.
The figures are published on Monday by Global Blue, a tracker of luxury goods tourism based in Switzerland. Retailers in the UK, particularly London, reported slow sales during the games.
