Marissa Mayer, a long-serving Google executive, has become Yahoo’s fifth chief executive in four years to step up to the challenge of turning around the struggling web portal.
Ms Mayer succeeds Scott Thompson, who left in May after it emerged that he did not have an academic qualification claimed in his résumé, and Ross Levinsohn, Yahoo’s head of media, who has been acting as interim chief since then.
Yahoo shares rose 2.1 per cent in after-market trade on the news, which investors hope will end a long period of uncertainty since Carol Bartz was fired as chief executive in September.
