Faced with a 40 per cent drop in exports to Europe in the first quarter of this year, Chungping Ip is redoubling his efforts to sell to Chinese customers.
Mr Ip’s company, Forever Holdings, which makes ironing boards and laundry baskets for retailers in Europe and the US, joined forces last summer with four other manufacturers to open their own shop in the Chinese city of Foshan. This year they plan to open four more.
“We are trying to be like Ikea,” Mr Ip says. “The middle class in China and India is a small portion of the total population, but the numbers are very big.”
