China and the US have welcomed Ma Ying-jeou’s re-election as president of Taiwan in a victory that reaffirms his policy of establishing closer ties with Beijing.
Mr Ma secured a second term on Saturday after beating Tsai Ing-wen, the main opposition candidate. Mr Ma won 51.5 per cent of the vote, while Ms Tsai took 45.6 per cent.
“The winning of Ma Ying-jeou and the Kuomintang in Saturday’s elections may open new chances for the peaceful development of cross-strait relations,” Xinhua, China’s state news agency, said yesterday.
