A new Hungarian media law that has sparked a furore in Brussels appears to violate free expression principles in the European Union’s charter of fundamental rights, according to a letter sent to Budapest by a top EU official.
Budapest has been given two weeks to respond or face a formal probe.
The row has cast a cloud over the start of Hungary’s six months at the helm of the EU’s rotating presidency.
