Two of India's largest car parts suppliers, Bharat Forge and KPIT Cummins, have developed technology to transform a petrol- engined car into a hybrid one in just two hours.
The two companies, both based in Pune in Maharashtra, have formed a joint venture to produce what they have described as revolutionary battery-powered technology commercially within six months.
The move comes as carmakers prepare for the launch of hybrid models in India's and China's fast- growing car markets. General Motors, the US car company, will launch a hybrid partially battery-powered vehicle by the end of the year. BYD, which is backed by Warren Buffett, yesterday announced a joint venture with Daimler, the German car company, to develop an electric vehicle in China.
