Tony Blair was announced yesterday as Britain's official candidate to become the European Union's new president, even though he has not confirmed he wants the job and the post has yet to be created.
Glenys Kinnock, Britain's new Europe minister, surprised Downing Street and Mr Blair when she declared: “The UK government is supporting Tony Blair's candidature for president of the council.”
Although the former prime minister has been widely rumoured to be interested in becoming the president of the European Council – the body representing the EU's 27 member states – he has refused to confirm it publicly.
