Long Covid is costing UK workers a total of £1.5bn a month in lost earnings and looks set to have a lasting impact on Britain’s economy, according to research by the Institute for Fiscal Studies.
Official data showed around 2mn people had lasting symptoms of long Covid in May. The number of people with the condition has risen steadily over the course of the pandemic and doubled in the past year, according to the report. Around a fifth of those with the illness said it limited their day-to-day activities.
The IFS said separate survey evidence suggested that about one in 10 long Covid sufferers stopped working while they had the condition — most of them taking sick leave, rather than losing their job altogether.
