Boris Johnson told cabinet colleagues on Monday that the British public would have to endure even higher energy prices as the cost for inflicting “pain” on Russia through sanctions.
The UK prime minister said any suffering for consumers would be minimal compared to what the people of Ukraine were going through under the onslaught by the Russian military, according to officials.
His comments came against a backdrop of steep rises in energy prices in recent months, in part because of Russia limiting gas exports to western Europe.
