Donald Trump’s announcement that his next summit with Vladimir Putin will be hosted by the pro-Russian prime minister of Hungary has alarmed European capitals after the US president’s apparent siding with Moscow on how to end its war in Ukraine.
The US and Russian leaders agreed last week to meet again in Budapest during a friendly call. The day after, Trump pressed Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy to cede to Moscow’s demands.
The choice of the venue has irritated Kyiv and other European capitals because Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has long been an ally of Russia and an EU antagonist, despite Hungary’s EU and Nato membership.
