The EU is considering classifying ethanol as a dangerous substance that increases the risk of cancer, a move that would de facto ban many hand sanitisers and detergents used by hospitals.
Alcohol-based cleansers are authorised as safe in the bloc and have been on the World Health Organization’s essential medicines list since the 1990s.
But an October 10 internal recommendation by one of the working groups within the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) flagged ethanol as a toxic substance which increased the risk of cancer and pregnancy complications and needed to be replaced in cleaning and other products.
