Lawmakers in Peru voted to impeach President Dina Boluarte on Friday, ending a scandal-ridden tenure marked by a surge in crime.
Boluarte was removed early on Friday on grounds of “permanent moral incapacity” in a vote by 124 lawmakers, just hours after her fragile coalition fell apart.
Boluarte assumed the presidency in December 2022 after her predecessor Pedro Castillo was impeached and jailed for attempting to close congress and rule by decree. But her government has been unable to curb the country’s growing list of extortion cases, with 13,667 reported this year, a 25 per cent increase from the same period in 2024.
