Sanae Takaichi hopes within days to achieve what her heroine Margaret Thatcher did and become the first woman to hold her country’s highest political office.
The arch conservative former TV anchor told a group of schoolchildren at the weekend that she has harboured dreams of becoming Japan’s prime minister since she was 24 years old — an era when Thatcher dominated UK politics.
“Why? I love Japan very much,” said Takaichi when asked why she wanted to become prime minister. “My goal is to become the ‘Iron Lady’,” she said in a separate television appearance the previous weekend.
