The US Department of Justice has opened a criminal investigation into Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook, according to a person familiar with the matter, in an escalation of the Trump administration’s attempts to remove her from the board of the central bank.

The accusations were linked to mortgages for properties in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Atlanta, Georgia.
