Millions of English homes that have lead paint potentially pose a health risk, MPs and academics have warned, as pressure grows on the government to release fresh guidance on how households can protect themselves.
Britain has some of the oldest housing in the world with many properties still containing the toxic substance, which as it flakes and rubs off walls, windows and door frames can create a poisonous dust.
The government last year withdrew its guidelines for the public on how to “decorate safely” in homes where lead is present, deeming it “out of date”, but recently said new advice would not be issued.
