Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdo?an has extended his rule into a third decade, comfortably beating his rival Kemal K?l??daro?lu on Sunday in an acrimonious run-off election.
Erdo?an had secured about 52.1 per cent of the vote with almost all the counting complete, according to Turkey’s election board, putting him significantly ahead of K?l??daro?lu on 47.9 per cent.
The run-off victory caps an extraordinary campaign for Erdo?an, who went into this election cycle at his most vulnerable since he first became Turkey’s leader in 2003, with the country gripped by an acute cost of living crisis and an opposition at its most organised in years.
